Lisa Firestone — President and CEO
Lisa M. Firestone, MHSA President and CEO of Managed Care Advisors, Inc. has been involved in the healthcare industry for more than 30 years gaining recognition for her expertise in the areas of workers’ compensation, disability management and employee benefit program development, management, evaluation and strategic planning. Ms. Firestone has been actively involved in the evolution of workers’ compensation case management and disability management programs, most recently focusing on the federal workers’ compensation and disability systems.
Ms. Firestone started her career in hospital administration at a large, university-based medical center, followed by more than six years as a health benefits consultant and practice manager with The Martin E. Segal Company and American International Healthcare. Prior to founding Managed Care Advisors in 1997, Ms. Firestone served as Vice President and Principal with Managed Care Options.
Ms. Firestone serves on the Governing Board of Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) and is a Co-Chair of the WIPP Procurement Committee. She is also a member of the WBENC Certification Committee and an at-large member of Women President’s Organization (WPO). Ms. Firestone was named the 2011 VIP (Victory in Procurement) Teaming Government Contractor of the Year by American Express Open.
Susan Kappel — Senior Vice President
Susan B. Kappel, MSHA, Senior Vice President of Managed Care Advisors, Inc., has oversight responsibility for Managed Care Advisors’ consulting practice and client services and provides direct consulting services. Ms. Kappel has been working in the benefits consulting industry for almost 20 years and has been with Managed Care Advisors since its inception in 1997. With over 25 years of experience in managed health care, development and operations for governmental entities, employers, payers and providers, Ms. Kappel’s experience encompass virtually all aspects of health care including managed care program operations, employee benefits, workers’ compensation, provider network development, evaluation, and provider relations.
Prior to her career in consulting, Ms. Kappel worked several years inpatient care, followed by more than eight years as Director of Provider Relations for a national managed care plan.
Ms. Kappel has an undergraduate degree in Health Care Policy from the University of Maryland and a Masters of Science in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia.
Daryl Whitman – Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President
Daryl Whitman is the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President of Managed Care Advisors, Inc., and oversees Managed Care Advisors’ Human Resources, IT, Analytics, and Administration functions. Mr. Whitman also plays an active role in strategic and budget planning. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant at Managed Care Advisors from 2004 to 2007 and rejoined the organization in the fall of 2015. He has spent the majority of his career primarily in healthcare, managed care, and consulting. Prior to joining Managed Care Advisors, he held senior operations roles at Hanger, Inc. and UnitedHealthcare.
Barbara DeGray — Vice President, Case Management
Barbara DeGray, RN, is the Vice President of Case Management at Managed Care Advisors, Inc.
Ms. DeGray holds an undergraduate degree in Nursing from Georgetown University and a Masters of Business Administration degree in Health Administration from the University of Miami. Also, she is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) and holds a Certificate in Health Care Administration and a Certificate in Quality Assurance and Utilization Review.
Dr. David Sack — Chief Medical Officer
Dr. David Sack MD, MS, FACOEM is the Chief Medical Office of Managed Care Advisors, Inc. Dr. Sack is a board certified Occupational Medicine Physician by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. His expertise and experience are grounded in a 25-year career in the US Navy as an occupational medicine physician in which he held positions at the clinical, program management, and leadership levels – serving a worker population that included both active duty military personnel and civilian federal workers in shipyards and other industrial activities. In his current role, Dr. Sack maintains responsibility for both Managed Care Advisors’ Quality Assurance and Medical Review Physician Departments.
Dr. Sack received his Bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University, his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health from the University of Cincinnati. He completed residency training in occupational medicine at the University of Cincinnati and is board certified in this specialty. He is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Jon Jennelle, CPA, CGMA – Controller
Jonathan Jennelle is the Controller of Managed Care Advisors, Inc. and is responsible for the company’s overall financial management. He brings over 20 years of experience working with small to mid-sized companies in the construction, aerospace, technology and healthcare industries. His business knowledge extends to the areas of accounting and taxation, business development, government contracting, and business consulting.
Mr. Jennelle earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Tech and is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant.
Michael R. Smith — Chief Information and Security Officer
Michael R. Smith is the Chief Information and Security Officer for Managed Care Advisors, Inc. and has oversight responsibility for all of the organization’s technical solutions, including corporate governance, risk, and compliance functions, and promoting effective Cyber and Information Security policies to address resilience, Insider Threat and Third-Party Risk Management.
Mr. Smith joined Managed Care Advisors in 2020 with more than two decades of experience in supporting information security requirements for both the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Commerce. He is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert on government regulations and standards such as FISMA, HIPAA, and NIST.
Mr. Smith began his career with the U.S. Marine Corps, and since has held notable roles in security operations, business development, including chief security officer (CSO), chief information security officer (CISO) and other leadership positions with excellent communication skills. He is also a Certified Information Security Officer (CISO), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems, PECB: ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v3 and v4, Certified Enterprise Architect (CEA), and Certified Scrum Master.
Mr. Smith has two master’s degrees (MBA and Information Assurance) from Capitol Technology University in Laurel Maryland.
Rob Edelman — Vice President, Strategic Growth and Specialty Programs
Rob Edelman is the Vice President of Strategic Growth and Specialty Programs for Managed Care Advisors, Inc. and is the Senior Executive with responsibility for Managed Care Advisors’ business development, marketing and communications, specialty health programs, and innovation and product development. Mr. Edelman brings more than 24 years of claims, managed care, business development, and consulting experience with a proven track record of success and an exceptional reputation within the industry.
Prior to joining Managed Care Advisors in 2016, Mr. Edelman held senior operational management and business development roles with a number of commercial claims and managed care organizations, including as Director of Operations for MCN, Assistant Vice President for Healthcare Solutions, and Vice President of Sales for York Risk Service Group.
Mr. Edelman has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island.
